Castles

We watched the waves that roared and sighed,
And built our castles out of sand.
With pails and buckets, by the tide,
We built our naïve fairyland.
You tiny girl, and I a boy
Who lived and loved to make you smile;
I still recall, with painful joy
How we were such good friends a while.
The waves still roar, the waves still sigh,
While years go slipping by so fast;
Though memories will never die,
Our youthful friendship did not last.
